An Introduction to Imaginary Geometry

This expository paper is based on the theory of imaginary geometry, due to Sheffield and Miller. We aim to explain enough of the theory for the reader to understand the main constructions and some basic interactions between them in a short time. We suppress the more technical aspects when possible to focus attention on building geometric intuition.

Imaginary Geometry I: Interacting SLEs

Fix constants χ > 0 and θ ∈ [0, 2π), and let h be an instance of the Gaussian free field on a planar domain. We study flow lines of the vector field ei(h/χ+θ) starting at a fixed boundary point of the domain. Letting θ vary, one obtains a family of curves that look locally like SLEκ processes with κ ∈ (0, 4) (where χ = 2 √ κ − √ κ 2 ), which we interpret as the rays of a random geometry with pu...

Imaginary Killing Spinors in Lorentzian Geometry

We study the geometric structure of Lorentzian spin manifolds, which admit imaginary Killing spinors. The discussion is based on the cone construction and a normal form classification of skew-adjoint operators in signature (2, n−2). Derived geometries include Brinkmann spaces, Lorentzian Einstein-Sasaki spaces and certain warped product structures. Exceptional cases with decomposable holonomy o...

Did Lobachevsky Have a Model of His “imaginary Geometry”?

The invention of non-Euclidean geometries is often seen through the optics of Hilbertian formal axiomatic method developed later in the 19th century. However such an anachronistic approach fails to provide a sound reading of Lobachevsky’s geometrical works. Although the modern notion of model of a given theory has a counterpart in Lobachevsky’s writings its role in Lobachevsky’s geometrical the...

Transparency and imaginary colors.

Unlike the Metelli monochrome transparencies, when overlays and their backgrounds have chromatic content, the inferred surface colors may not always be physically realizable, and are in some sense "imaginary." In these cases, the inferred chromatic transmittance or reflectance of the overlay lies outside the RGB spectral boundaries. Using the classical Metelli configuration, we demonstrate this...
